Application of Neuroscience to Social Conflicts: Cases Applied in Mining Projects in Peru

By: Verónica Tello and Percy Garcia

Social neuroscience examines how the brain processes social information and empathy through the activation of mirror neurons and emotional processing areas. This research aims not only to understand human behavior and resolve conflicts between stakeholders, but also to transform those conflicts into a collaborative process. The results could help to a) provide a different lens of analysis for the resolution of social conflicts; b) not only resolve the conflict, but also transform it into beneficial opportunities for the parties; and c) reduce outgroup bias, achieving greater identification with the ingroup that contributes to resolving social conflicts.

Human Behavior in the Transformation of Social Conflicts

By: Percy Garcia and Verónica Tello

Social conflicts are best understood through the analysis of human behavior, which helps not only to provide more effective solutions but also to transform them into sustainable strategic alliances. Various types of human behavior come into play during social conflicts, including individual behavior, which influences impulsive decisions such as protests or violent confrontations; group behavior, which creates "us vs. them" divisions; and structural behavior, which refers to power imbalances (corporations vs. communities) resulting in protests. Therefore, analyzing the human behavior of stakeholders could a) provide a different analytical approach to resolving social conflicts, b) transform social conflict into mutually beneficial opportunities, and c) reduce the biases that differentiate in-group vs. out-group bias, thus contributing to the resolution of social conflicts.
